I started my tour off at a nice and crunchy warmshowers.org host in Vancouver.
One of the couple owned a bike shop, where I shipped my bike and set it up. Very helpful for some last minute fixes and changes... I have shipped my bicycle maybe 10 times in my life, less than half arrived undamaged. This time my rear rack was crushed, but easily replaced.
Upon their recommendation, I set off for Vancouver Island via the Tswassan ferry terminal. This ferry dropped me on Salt spring Island, to cycle across and then hop another ferry over to Vancouver Island.
The recommendation directed me to find the Cowichan rail trail that led to a campsite where i was told people float down a river in rafts. Turns out the trail was difficult to find, as it really wasn't worth finding... Super bumpy /rough and quite remote, it delivered me to no man's land, worse for wear.
The campsite I was looking for had been closed for 8 years, I later learned. But the remote clearing existed and I camped alone, in the middle of nowhere.
The next day, thank goodness for Google maps, I found some hilly back roads to return to paved roads towards Victoria and a hostel for the night.
